Safety Rules are the Best Tools — Teacher Guide
Directions
Group Work
In this project, students work in groups to:
- plan for a safety fair that will take place in your community; and
- determine the total cost for holding the fair.
Materials Needed
Each student will need one copy of the "Planning the Safety Fair" worksheet. There are five parts to the worksheet: 1. Location, 2. Safety Fair Booths, 3. Advertising, 4. Prizes, and 5. Safety Fair Costs. Teachers may opt to distribute the parts on separate days or all at once. Students should complete the Safety Fair Costs worksheets last. The order in which students complete the other worksheets does not matter.
Final Report
Individually, students:
- decide what to include in a safety kit that will be handed out to people who attend the fair: and
- determine the total cost for each kit.
Students should have access to their planning worksheets from group work as they complete the final report.
Extension Activity
Hold a mini safety fair in your classroom or at your school. Invite guest speakers or have students divide into teams to research an individual safety topic. Create posters promoting the event and invite people to attend.
